Phoenix spp.
Family: Arecaceae
The genus Phoenix, widespread in a large area ranging from the Canary Islands eastward to East Asia, includes numerous species of medium to large size that can reach heights of up to 30 m. The fruits of these palms are often edible drupes. Among the most commonly cultivated species we mention the date palm (Phoenix dactylifera) and the Canary Island palm (Phoenix canariensis). The date palm, probably native to North Africa, has been known since ancient times and has acquired significant symbolic meanings in Mediterranean civilizations. The Canary Island palm is widely cultivated in temperate regions, where it is used for ornamental purposes in parks, gardens, and urban green spaces.
