The complex of greenhouses dedicated to the renowned pathologist and botanist Luigi Califano, covers an area of approximately 5000 m2 and consists of various sections housing different collections. Among these, the most important is the cycad collection, which includes around 600 specimens belonging to nearly 100 species. These are true living fossils, widely spread during the time of dinosaurs. The cycad collection at the Botanical Garden of Naples is one of the richest and most diverse in the world, resulting from the collection and identification work of many Neapolitan botanists. Other collections of notable prestige housed in the Califano Greenhouses include Bromeliaceae, featuring numerous species of genus Tillandsia, insectivorous plants, and species of genus Sansevieria. These greenhouses are designed primarily for plant conservation rather than exhibition, and for the safety of visitors and collections, they may not always be open to the public.
